🌿 Protect, restore, involve, integrate: an unexpected convergence across four continents
Ahead of COP17 on biodiversity (Yerevan, 19–30 October 2026), CED is publishing Acting for Nature: Territorial Initiatives Contributing to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by 2030.
The report brings together 26 contributions submitted by 20 experts and partners across 13 countries. Each contributor independently declared which targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework their initiative contributes to. The result: of the 186 alignments recorded, four targets recur across a majority of them — area-based conservation (Target 3), ecosystem restoration (Target 2), participation of Indigenous peoples and local communities, women and youth (Target 22), and the integration of biodiversity into decision-making (Target 14).
A Himalayan village council, a Tunisian oasis, an urban lake in Québec, a royal chiefdom in Cameroon: territories that share almost nothing else, and yet the same signature.
The report is equally clear about what is missing. Target 19 (resource mobilisation) is declared by only 2 of the 26 initiatives, and Target 18 (reform of harmful subsidies) by none. Territories have learned to act; they have not been given the fiscal instruments to act at scale. That is the message CED brings to Yerevan: channelling biodiversity finance to subnational and community actors is an implementation priority, not an accounting question.
